TMD (TMJ) Treatment

For some people, temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD) can be a simple inconvenience. For others, it can lead to life-changing issues. Esthetic Family Dentistry offers TMD treatment plans for patients who are ready to experience life without jaw pain holding them back!

What is TMJ?

Your temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is the joint that controls jaw movements and connects your mandible to your skull. You have one on either side of your head in front of the ears. TMJ dysfunction can lead to pain and limited movement of the jaw joint. TMD affects nearly 10 million Americans.

Symptoms of TMD

One of the primary symptoms of TMD is jaw pain, but severe cases may cause everyday movements to become more difficult. Feel free to ask our doctors about TMD treatment if you suffer from any of the following:

  • Headache
  • Bruxism (teeth grinding)
  • Light sensitivity
  • Neck pain and stiffness
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Clicking or popping jaw joints
  • Inability to open mouth smoothly

How Can We Treat TMD?

Fortunately, TMJ disorders are treatable. Each TMD treatment will vary for everyone since the disorder has several possible causes. Though most cases can improve with jaw exercises, home treatments, or physical therapy, surgery may be necessary for some patients. Your doctor will discuss this with you if none of the suggested methods have been successful.
