When you’re missing more than half of a tooth, or if large amounts of decay undermine a tooth’s integrity, a filling is no longer the best treatment choice. We may recommend an inlay, onlay, or crown in these cases. These cosmetic dental procedures can help restore your teeth to their normal look and function.
Inlays and onlays are considered indirect fillings, so they’re usually fabricated outside of the mouth at a dental lab. These dental restorations are generally made of porcelain or composite resin, and your dentist will bond a custom-made piece to the damaged area of your tooth. An inlay fits within the cusps of your molars, and an onlay is designed to extend over the cusps.
Getting an inlay or onlay is similar to having a crown placed. The only difference is that we will remove less of your natural tooth structure.
The first step is to numb the surrounding area. Next, we’ll remove the decay, prep the tooth, and take an impression to send to the dental laboratory. You will need to wear a temporary restoration until the permanent one is complete. Once the final restoration is available, we will place it on the affected tooth.
Inlays and onlays are strong, long-lasting, and require no special type of care. Daily brushing and flossing, along with professional dental cleanings, are enough to ensure your restoration lasts for years to come. Other benefits include:
