What is Tooth Decay?

Tooth decay occurs when acid-producing bacteria collect around the teeth and gums. This acid attacks the enamel, and serious damage can occur if left untreated. You become more vulnerable to decay if you don’t practice healthy oral hygiene daily or visit your dentist regularly.

Topical vs. Systemic Fluoride

You can obtain fluoride in two different forms.

Topical fluorides are applied directly onto the enamel of your teeth. These are often included in toothpastes or mouth rinses. Systemic fluorides are designed to be ingested, and people generally obtain them through fluorinated water or other supplements. Fluoride treatments at the dentist’s office primarily use topical substances, but both forms can ensure maximum effects for reducing tooth decay.

What Happens During a Professional Fluoride Treatment?

A fluoride treatment at the dentist typically takes a few minutes. Depending on the type of treatment you choose, your dentist will either apply the solution to your teeth using a cotton swab, give you a mouth rinse to swish, or hold a tray in your mouth for several minutes.

After the treatment, please avoid eating, drinking, or rinsing your mouth for at least 30 minutes so your teeth can fully absorb the fluoride.
