The health of our teeth is crucial to the health of the rest of our bodies. From chewing to talking, our teeth are used every day, so let us examine the structure that allows them to perform these functions so smoothly. Here is what makes our teeth work so well.

How does enamel protect teeth?

In dentistry, the crown refers to the portion of a tooth that is above our gums. The crown is made up of three layers. Enamel is the first layer, dentin is the second, and dental pulp is the third. These layers keep our teeth protected so we can enjoy our favorite things. Your teeth's outer layer, called enamel, is the hardest substance on your body. There is no substance harder than enamel on your body. In order to properly digest food, our teeth must be strong and tough. There is one important difference between enamel and bone: enamel is composed of living cells, which allows it to repair teeth that may have been damaged by foods we eat. Protecting our enamel involves avoiding acids that can cause erosion. By brushing and flossing daily and visiting your dentist regularly, you can prevent the loss of enamel on your teeth.

What is Dentin?

A softer substance called dentin lies beneath the enamel layer. The dentin layer is softer, more yellowish, and less attractive than the first layer of enamel. Like bones, this substance is composed of calcified living tissue. A dentist can measure it by feeling its texture. The pulp has microscopic tubules that connect it to the enamel of your teeth. You will experience sensitivity in your teeth if you don't take care of them properly or if they are starting to wear down because the tubules are exposed to the outer layer.

Is Dental Pulp Important?

There is a pocket in the center of each tooth that contains what is called dental pulp. There are tissues, nerves, and blood vessels in the dental pulp that help keep your teeth healthy and give you feeling. Detecting pain is also key to identifying when something is wrong and requiring expert care.

What are Roots?

Each tooth has a root system located deep within the jawbone. Your roots are composed of hollow nerves, blood vessels, periodontal ligaments, and gum tissue. Together they serve as an anchor that holds the teeth in place. Our teeth would not be able to perform as well without this complex root system.
